About Our Research Program
Under the direction of Roy G. Geronemus, M.D., the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York is one of the largest of its kind worldwide. The center has a full time, on-site research division occupying 1500 square feet of space that is devoted exclusively to investigative pursuits.
Our physicians are renowned for their investigation in the areas of technical laser development and clinical applications of vascular, pigmented, resurfacing, leg vein and hair removal lasers. Other areas of investigation have included photodynamic therapy, cosmetic fillers substances, and topical pharmaceutical products and wound care products.
Located in the heart of New York City, with a local, national and international referral base of over 100,000 patients, our research division provides an ideal setting for recruiting patients into clinical trials. Our longstanding relationship with a free standing Institutional Review Board enables expeditious reviews of experimental protocols. Study trials are executed promptly and efficiently with the assistance of our full time research staff that has extensive experience in protocol development, patient recruitment, photography and computer imaging.
State-of-the-art imaging devices are employed to most accurately assess patients and provide optimum research data. All patients have high resolution digital photography that is exactly standardized in order to ensure the highest accuracy. The Vectra 3D Imaging system enables 360º patient photography providing high quality images and allowing highly accurate measurement for case assessment, treatment planning, and pre/post-operative review. Similarly the PRIMOS 3D measuring device allows high resolution assessment of colour, texture and volume, and is the only such handheld device in the world. Non invasive measurement of biomechanical skin properties is provided by the Biomechanical Tissue Characterization 2000 device which accurately provides information on up to eight different biomechanical properties of the skin tested.

Treatment for Pigmented Lesions, Vascular Lesions and Scars
Study participants must be 18-85 years of age with unwanted pigmented lesions (ie: congenital nevi, Becker’s nevus, café au lait, nevus of Ota, etc.), vascular lesions (ie: port wine stains, telangiectasia, etc.) and/or thickened discolored scars. You will receive up to ten (10) treatments scheduled 4-8 weeks apart. Subjects cannot have received treatment to the area within the last 3 months.

Topical Cream for Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (Darkening of the Skin)
Study participants must be 18 to 65 years of age seeking treatment for Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) on the facial region. Topical cream will be applied at home over the course of 42 days. The study consists of 4 treatment visits (Day 1, Day 6, Day 15 & Day 29) & 3 follow up visits (1 Day, 4 Weeks & 12 Weeks post last treatment). You must have a Fitzpatrick Skin Type of I - V.

Evaluating the Tolerability and Effectiveness of a Biocellulose Mask following a Full Face Fraxel Laser Treatment
Study participants must be 35-60 years of age with moderate hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) on the face. This study is for female participants ONLY who are generally in good health. You must have a Fitzpatrick Skin Type of I - III. The study will involve 5 office visits over two (2) weeks. Includes One (1) full face Fraxel treatment, One (1) day follow up, Three (3) day follow up, Seven (7) day follow up and a fourteen (14) day follow up.

Submental (under the chin) Fat Reduction by Injection
Study participants must be 18 years of age or older and have a double chin with NO skin laxity (loose skin). You must have a BMI (body mass index) less than or equal to 40. The study involves up to 6 sets of injections scheduled 4 weeks apart. Participants must return 1 week after every set of injections for a follow-up assessment. After the final treatment, you must return at 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, 9 months & 1 year for follow-up assesments.

Must have a history of stable diet and exercise with a body mass index (BMI) less than 25. No prior treatments to the area (i.e. abdominoplasty, liposuction, exposure to ablative or body contouring devices, mesotherapy, or lipolytic agents). No skin conditions in the treatment area (i.e. infections, psoriasis, eczema, excessive skin wrinkles, pannus)
