Collagen Filler Procedure
The correction of deep folds along the border of the cheek and lips or the enhancement of the contour of the lips have been traditionally approached utilizing collagen injection. Collagen injection has proven to be a very safe and simple procedure which implants a small quantity of synthetic, bovine, or a person's own cultured collagen (Isologen) in the lower layers of the skin. This filler material in essence expands the thickness of the skin in order to flatten deep folds, enhance lip contouring, and to correct fine lines and depressed scars. This correction, however, is temporary. Improvement obtained by synthetic and bovine collagen injections generally persist from three to five months. In addition, as synthetic and bovine collagen implants are foreign material to human skin, allergy testing is performed prior to treatment with these products.
