Fat Transfer or Lipoinjection
The structural changes in the face throughout life are in part due to the redistribution of fat. From infancy through adulthood it is fat that characterizes the shape of the face. A baby has an identifiable distribution of fat in the form of chubby cheeks jowls and neck rolls. Interestingly this distribution is seen again in the older adult, but we mistake it for loose skin and push the blame on gravity. Gravitational aging is the basis for all conventional cosmetic surgery, but naming gravity as the culprit of facial aging and skin sagging is flawed. Sagging occurs in the aging face not because of gravity but because of the changes in the fat compartments that accompanies aging. Facelifts "tailor " the skin around the aging framework, fat rebalancing replaces the lost framework so the skin can once again assume its normal position on the face. Fat injection, or lipoinjection, has been utilized for many years to correct minor defects in skin contour to address the inevitable changes in the face due to disease, surgery, and the dilemma of facial aging. Fat rebalancing is the artful specialty of harvesting fat from the body and using it as a sculpting material in the face. It has evolved far beyond the temporary line filler it once was and is now our most revolutionary procedure. This technique is a permanent correction on the most part due to the "harvesting" process and the subsequent grafting of fat cells. Tumescent local anesthesia is used to numb the "donor" site The fat is then extracted with a small blunt instrument attached to syringes. The fat is then "woven" deep in the facial tissue to replace the lost volume and bolster the area up. It is a minimally invasive procedure that can and does provide results that surpass most aggressive surgical techniques. We do our procedure in a series of treatments to insure the survival of the fat and to maintain control of the results.
