Rhinophyma is an overgrowth of sebaceous or oily glands of the nose.


Rhinophyma is a bulbous nose that is more commonly found on men than women. Treatment is available to help smooth the texture of the nose. These procedures are typically performed in the office setting by a board-certified dermatologic surgeon using local anesthesia, and the treatment is also available with IV sedation administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist.

How Is This Treated?

Treatment of this bulbous appearance of the nose usually involves different resurfacing procedures such as the use of a carbon dioxide laser, as well as electrosurgery. The Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York uses the following lasers to treat rhinophyma:

is there a cure for rhinophyma?

There is currently no cure for rhinophyma. However, our patients typically see long-lasting benefits with a very low recurrence rate. Surgical treatment may be recommended to treat respiratory issues caused by the obstruction of the external nasal valves.

Q: What Causes Rhinophyma?

A: Characterized by a swollen, red, bumpy or bulbous nose, the exact cause of rhinophyma is unknown. It is considered a subtype of severe rosacea and can occur as part of phymatous rosacea.

Q: How Long After Treatment Until I Will See Results?

A: Total recovery time for these procedures is approximately six weeks. The skin will start to appear smoother after recovery.

Q: What Are The Possible Side Effects of Treatment?

Possible side effects of treatment are pigmentary changes and scarring.

Q: How Long Is The Recovery Time After Treatment?

A: It usually takes two weeks after CO2 Laser Surgery for the new skin to completely cover the wound. Heal time for electrosurgery is about a week.
