As we age, gravity and fluctuations in weight can cause our neck to develop excess fat and a looser, less defined jaw-line. A neck lift, sometimes referred to as a mini-facelift or neck contouring, is a long-lasting solution that can help create a youthful, more defined, and attractive jaw-line. However, it’s important to know that a neck lift will not treat an aging face. If both areas are a concern, your surgeon may recommend combining the facelift with the neck lift to achieve an optimal outcome.
Neck lifts can be performed under general anesthesia or local with sedation. Incisions are strategically placed in areas where visible scarring will be minimal. For a select group of older patients, a direct excision of the ‘waddle’ may be a good alternative. This can be accomplished with local anesthesia and minimal downtime.
Your surgeon will take plenty of time at your initial consultation to examine the area and discuss your concerns and goals to ensure your neck lift meets your expectations and produces the best possible results for you. We also offer a wide range of surgical procedures to help patients achieve all their aesthetic goals.
What does a neck lift treat?
A neck lift can address the following signs of aging in the neck:
- Submental fat that creates the “double chin” appearance
- Loose skin around the front of the neck that can lead to the “wattle”
- Lack of definition along the jawline
- Horizontal banding around the neck
- Loss of skin elasticity and wrinkles
How does a neck lift work?
A neck lift typically is a combination of fat removal with liposuction and skin tightening. It may be performed using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Your surgeon will determine the best approach for you based on your general health and the amount of correction you require.
Neck lift surgery can last anywhere between 45 minutes to three hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. Incisions are created behind the ear and under the chin, where they will leave little or no visible scarring behind. During the procedure, your surgeon removes excess skin and tightens the neck muscle. Excess fat is removed and tissue is repositioned to create a natural contour.
What is recovery like?
There is minimal downtime after surgery. Most patients can return to work and normal activities within 3 – 7 days. You will likely experience some bruising and swelling, which can persist for up to 3 weeks or longer. However, those side effects usually aren’t noticeable after the first week or so, allowing you to return to social and professional activities with confidence.
What results can I expect?
Final results are visible after swelling has completely diminished. In some cases, patients may experience a small amount of residual swelling for 4-6 months. Once this has subsided, you will be able to enjoy your rejuvenated neck for up to 10 years or longer. Results are more durable if you use daily sun protection and high-quality skincare to keep the skin in top condition after surgery.
