About Midtown South

Midtown South has a colorful history, from its days as a wild red-light district to the advent of Madison Square Garden. This busy center was once called The Tenderloin and is now considered the jewel of Manhattan.

Home to the Empire State Building, Korea Town, and  Pennsylvania Station, this bustling area of the Big Apple has no shortage of things to do and see. From 42nd Street to the north, 23rd Street to the south, Lexington Avenue to the east, and Eighth Avenue to the west, Midtown South is made up of several neighborhoods, including Chelsea, Hudson Yards, the Garment District, Kips Bay, Murray Hill, and Rose Hill.

History of Midtown South

Known as the largest business hub in the world, Midtown grew in 1871 when the New York Central Railroad opened a stop at its current location of East 42nd Street. The railroad opened up Midtown as a giant transportation center, with seven crosstown streets passing through the railroad’s property. Two of those streets were made for vehicles. The remaining five were left for pedestrians, making Manhattan a pedestrian city.

As a part of Midtown Manhattan, Midtown South’s history lies within Manhattan’s borders. Serving as Manhattan’s primary central business district, Midtown Manhattan’s history pushes forward with the businessman in mind. Midtown, as it is affectionately called, is home to some of the most iconic buildings in the world, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and the United Nations Headquarters.

In 1902, the Flatiron Building was built. The Metropolitan Life Tower went up in 1909 and the  Croisic Building was erected in 1912. In 1913, the New York Central Railroad’s East 42nd Street depot was rebuilt and replaced by the Grand Central Terminal of Grand Central Station. Prior to 1902, the construction of skyscrapers like these was unheard of, as Midtown was considered a transportation hub.
