Laser for Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a very common skin condition. When mild to moderate cases don’t improve with topical medications, treatment with an Excimer Laser is an excellent alternative. Psoriasis is an inflammatory condition. Ultraviolet light treatments have been improved over the last few decades to suppress this inflammation.

Now, we can accelerate the improvement by using a laser device rather than a light treatment. Delivering this specific form of light (“narrow-band ultraviolet B 308nm) with a laser only to the affected areas allows for faster treatments and fewer treatment sessions. The laser targets the psoriasis, leaving healthy skin untouched for a more comfortable process and faster healing time.

Many patients have significant improvement in several weeks with remissions lasting several months or more. Excimer laser treatments are often covered by insurance. To find out more about this state-of-the-art treatment, call our office to schedule a consultation.

How does Laser Treatment for Psoriasis Work?

The 308 Excimer laser delivers a powerful beam of light directly into the plaque, reducing the inflammation and scaling without harming surrounding skin and tissue. Over time, the psoriasis symptoms continue to diminish, leaving the patient with clearer skin. The laser can work more efficiently than other light treatments, due to its ability to send a more powerful ray without touching healthy tissue. This means patients tend to see better results in fewer treatment sessions overall.

When Will I See Results?

You will likely see improvement in your psoriasis symptoms with each treatment session. Patients typically require 2-3 treatment sessions each week for several weeks to achieve an optimal result. Some patients enjoy remission from their psoriasis at that point for many months or even longer.

How Long is the Recovery Time After Treatment?

Because the treatment does not affect healthy tissue, recovery after a laser treatment for psoriasis is generally minimal. In fact, many of our patients return to their activities immediately following treatment or the next day. You may see some mild swelling or blistering in the treatment area, but these side effects should not be severe enough to keep you from your daily routine.

Questions and Answers

Q: Is Laser Treatment for Psoriasis Safe?

A: Yes. The 308 Excimer laser is an FDA-approved device that can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including psoriasis. Our board-certified physicians have extensive experience using this laser and will use their expertise to customize your treatment so it is as safe and effective as possible.

Q: How Many Treatments Will I Need?

A: Patients will need a series of treatment sessions to achieve the best possible results. We typically recommend treatments 2-3 times a week for several weeks. The procedure only takes a few minutes to complete in our office, so you can complete your treatment plan without a major disruption to your daily routine.

Q: How Long Do Results Last?

A: Some patients find that once their treatment sessions are completed, psoriasis goes into remission for many months or even longer. Touch-up sessions can be used to keep symptoms in check over the long term as well.

Q: Are There Any Side Effects?

A: Side effects from the laser procedure are generally mild and temporary. Patients may experience mild swelling or blistering in the treatment area, which is likely to subside in just a few days. Since the surrounding healthy skin remains untouched, no side effects are seen outside the focalized treatment area.

Q: Am I A Good Candidate for Laser Treatments?

A: If you are struggling with the physical and emotional discomfort of psoriasis, laser treatments designed to reduce symptoms might be a good answer for you. We are happy to schedule a consultation with you to discuss your concerns and assess your condition in person.
