Belotero Balance ® is the newest filler containing hyaluronic acid to treat patients with moderate to severe nasolabial folds. Belotero ® contains a specialized form of hyaluronic acid that is monophasic and double cross-linked. It was specifically designed to be used in delicate areas, like the vertical lip lines which commonly develop around the mouth. Belotero can also be used in the thin-skinned areas around the eye. Because of its unique formulation, it may be less likely to cause lumpiness or discoloration than the other hyaluronic acid products. Belotero can also be used to treat more common areas like the nasolabial folds and marionette lines in men and women.
All of our physicians at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York have extensive experience with fillers and injectables. We are leaders in the field of cosmetic dermatology and the largest users of fillers and injectables in the world.
How does Belotero Balance Work?
Belotero Balance works deep into the dermal layers to restore support lost due to collagen depletion. Collagen is a protein found in the dermal structure that gives the skin its smooth, supple appearance. Over time, our bodies produce less collagen, leading to skin laxity and wrinkle formation. By restoring that support, Belotero effectively reverses some signs of aging to refresh and rejuvenate the appearance.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body. It helps the dermal structure to retain moisture and volume. When hyaluronic acid is placed into the dermal structure, it produces smooth, natural skin rejuvenation from the inside out.
Do Belotero Balance Injections Hurt?
Since Belotero does not contain lidocaine in the syringe, we usually recommend coming to the office at least 30 minutes in advance of your appointment for topical numbing cream. This additional step ensures your treatments are comfortable. We will administer your procedure via a small needle or blunt-tipped cannula to minimize side effects and further enhance your comfort level.
When Will I See Results?
You will see improvement in your wrinkles immediately following your treatment. There may be some mild swelling or bruising around the injection sites that will interfere with your final result. But once the skin heals fully, which usually only takes a day or two, the full results become apparent and will last for up to 6 months.
How Long is the Recovery Time After Treatment?
After treatment, you should be able to resume your normal activities. There is minimal downtime and your dermatologist may give you specific aftercare instructions. Sometimes a bruise occurs because of the needle’s contact with the skin, so plan accordingly with your personal and professional obligations. We can also minimize bruising with topical or laser treatments after your injections.

Do Men Receive Belotero Injections?
Yes. Belotero Balance and other dermal fillers are a popular treatment among men and we treat male patients routinely at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, nearly 62,000 men received hyaluronic acid fillers in the US in 2018.
Men often have different goals when they come in for dermal fillers. The difference in skin texture and thickness also needs to be taken into account when treating men. Our dermatologists have the expertise and experience to ensure both male and female patients achieve results that look natural while improving the appearance.
Questions and Answers
Q: Is Belotero Balance Safe?
A: Yes, Belotero has been proven to be both safe and effective when administered by a doctor who is board-certified and has extensive training in the procedure. The FDA approved Belotero Balance in 2011 as a safe and effective treatment for moderate to severe facial lines and creases. In 2018, more than 2.5 million people had treatments using soft tissue fillers, including Restylane. The filler has a long track record of safety and success in the US.
Q: How Long Do Results Last?
A: You will see immediate improvement after your Belotero injections. Those results will last up to six months, depending on the treatment area and how quickly your body absorbs the hyaluronic acid. You can maintain your refreshed appearance indefinitely with regularly scheduled treatment sessions.
Q: Do Dermal Fillers Treat All Wrinkles?
A: Dermal fillers like Belotero Balance work on the lines that form as a result of collagen loss and skin laxity. Known as static wrinkles, those creases are usually found around the nose, mouth, and chin. The filler works by restoring volume lost after collagen levels decline. It can also be effective in adding subtle volume to the tear troughs to reduce the appearance of hollowing. Dermal fillers are not effective on wrinkles that form as a result of certain facial expressions. Those lines, which commonly occur on the upper portion of the face, respond much better to neuromodulators like Botox.
Q: Are There Any Side Effects?
A: Side effects from dermal fillers like Belotero are uncommon and temporary if they do occur. Some patients might experience slight redness, swelling or bruising around the injection sites, which typically subsides within a day or two. To minimize bruising, we recommend patients avoid unnecessary blood thinners like NSAIDs, fish oil and vitamin E prior to treatment.
Q: Will My Face Look And Feel Unnatural?
A: When treated by a licensed and trained injector who has expertise in facial anatomy, like the board-certified cosmetic dermatologists at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York, you can expect natural results that are not obvious to everyone around you. Because Belotero contains hyaluronic acid, which is found in the body as well, your filler will integrate into your dermal tissue to create subtle improvement. You’ll still look like you, just younger, smoother, and more refreshed.
Q: Is Belotero Right for Me?
A: Belotero is typically recommended to our patients that have moderate to severe static lines around their nose and mouth. It is also used to reduce perioral lines and hollowing under the eyes. The filler is safe and effective for all skin types and tones. We encourage you to schedule a consultation in our office to find out if Belotero is the right choice for you.
