Uptown Manhattan

Although not as popular to tourists as Downtown or Midtown, Uptown Manhattan and its generous offering of museums, green spaces, and cultural attractions, plus its quieter atmosphere, give the neighborhood its own unique charm.

History of Uptown Manhattan

The latter part of the 19th century marked the beginning of Uptown Manhattan’s transformation. When the IRT Ninth Avenue Line and other elevated railroads increased mobility among New Yorkers, locals gained better access to shopping, restaurants, and entertainment. It was in the late 20th century that the gentrification that was taking place in the neighboring boroughs influenced Uptown Manhattan. The city’s rapidly growing population helped commercialism and the real estate market flourish, turning Uptown Manhattan into the thriving neighborhood it is today.

Dining in Uptown Manhattan

While the dining scene is not as robust as surrounding neighborhoods, Uptown Manhattan has more than enough variety and culinary innovations that make any visit worthwhile.

A true neighborhood restaurant, The Ribbon is a modern yet homey tavern serving American comfort food classics, some with a twist. Its extensive menu has everything from eggs benedict and hot chicken & cheddar chive pancake for brunch and NYC strip steak, lobster & shrimp curry, and fried chicken for dinner.

Chef Russell Jackson’s Reverence puts the spotlight on farm-to-table cooking, celebrating fresh and simple ingredients through a curated five-course tasting menu of Asian, French, and Latin American influences. Dishes include escargot with fermented uni-chile crema, Peruvian uni cooked in shiso butter, and quail egg empanada.

Moonrise Izakaya is an intimate gastropub offering Japanese comfort food and a unique izakaya experience. Diners can feast on katsu curry, yaki udon, dumplings, and fried rice in a fun and colorful atmosphere, thanks to Japanese muralist Shiro, who covered almost every surface with her signature manga-style characters.
