Yorkville

Yorkville is a Manhattan, New York City neighborhood on the Upper East Side and is one of the city’s most affluent neighborhoods. It is bound by the East River to Third Avenue and East 96th Street to East 97th Street. Yorkville is a slow-paced, family-friendly area that appeals to medical professionals and young families due to its proximity to the hospital complex and excellent schools.

History of Yorkville

Yorkville was once overrun with forests and streams in Colonial times, and in 1776 George Washington placed half of the Continental Army in Manhattan along the East River to defend against British land and sea forces. After the defeat in the Battle of Long Island, the Continental Army moved out of the Yorkville area, and by 1815, Yorkville became a farmland and market district.

The New York and Harlem Railroad was one of the earliest railway systems in the U.S. and helped establish Yorkville and gain commercial development. The Yorkville street grid was implemented between 1839-1844 as part of the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811 and was included in the 19th administrative district. After the American Civil War, trams were built in Yorkville, and mansions slowly replaced the slums. By 1879, the IRT Second and Third avenue lines were opened and provided transportation in and around Yorkville.
