Wall Street is more than just an eight-block long street belonging to the New York Financial District with frenzied energy primarily emanating from busy traders and investors. It is also a dynamic neighborhood rich in history, culture, and emblematic architecture, creating lots of tourist attractions.

History of Wall Street

Wall Street, one of the most famous streets in America, got its name from a literal, physical wall erected in 1653. It was built to defend Dutch colonists from the British and Native Americans, however, the Dutch colony outgrew the wall, which was eventually taken down in 1699. The street kept its name.

With its proximity to the city’s ports, Wall Street thrived as a street bazaar and became the center of trade in the 1700s. Wall Street is now one of the world’s most significant financial institutions. It is colorful, energetic, and beautifully decorated with neoclassic buildings and neo-gothic structures that stem from the opulent Gilded Age. Wall Street has historical significance too and is symbolized by the many monuments and memorials that commemorate some of the country’s most consequential events and figures.

Dining on Wall Street

While money and power are influential to Wall Street, other things make the Financial District a one-of-a-kind destination. One reason to visit is its plethora of dining options.

Danny Meyer’s Gramercy Tavern has nine James Beard Awards, including “Outstanding Restaurant” and “Outstanding Chef in America” under its belt. Diners regularly go back for their superb contemporary American cuisine and gracious hospitality. Gramercy Tavern constantly heroes ingredients from local farms and purveyors, creating a seasonal menu that is always fresh and creative. Dishes include Grilled Summer Squash and Duck Meatloaf.

Crown Shy is located on the ground floor of one of the city’s most elusive skyscrapers, 70 Pine Street. It is a seasonal restaurant that features an innovative fine dining concept rooted in European technique. Crown Shy’s menu offers dishes such as Tuna Crudo with grapes and verjus and Octopus a la Plancha with chorizo and sweet potato mole –all inspired by travels, world cuisines, and nostalgic childhood flavors.

Things to Do on Wall Street

Interesting landmarks, tours, and sites make spending a day at Wall Street a must-do.

A shining emblem of Wall Street, the Charging Bull is a 7,000-pound bronze sculpture that was a gift to the city from Italian artist, Arturo Di Modica. Many tourists make sure to have a photo with it or rub it for good luck and prosperity.

Visiting the New York Stock Exchange is a must. While visitors cannot go inside one of the city’s most influential buildings, the historical site is still impressive to see up close. One can take photos of the famous landmark or listen for the opening bell, which is rung at 9:30 am every weekday.

Battery Park is home to Castle Clinton, a sandstone war fort, and offers one of the best views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The best time to visit is during sunset when the views of Lady Liberty and New York Harbor are picture-perfect.
