Our Center Offers the First FDA Cleared Picosecond Laser For the Treatment of Tattoos and Pigmented Lesions

December 4, 2012

The Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York offers New York’s first Picosecond laser for tattoo and pigmented lesion removal.

The FDA has cleared the PicoSure™ laser for tattoo and pigmented lesion removal. The approval is based on the clinical work performed at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York under the direction of Dr. Roy G. Geronemus which has been published in the Archives of Dermatology. At the present time there are three PicoSure™ lasers in the world, two of which are at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York,  located in midtown Manhattan.

The PicoSure™ laser delivers short bursts of energy to the skin in trillionths of a second and more rapidly clears almost all tattoos, especially blue and green colors which have been difficult to remove by other lasers. The Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York study included 22 subjects with multicolored and recalcitrant tattoos that were treated with PicoSure™ over a two-week period. The results demonstrated greater than 80% overall tattoo clearance. On average, 94% clearance was achieved for blue and green ink.

PicoSure™ laser treatments are performed with local anesthesia and are only performed by board certified and fellowship trained dermatologists at our center.

Dr Roy Geronemus will be a featured plenary session speaker at the American Academy of Dermatology’s summer meeting

Dr Roy Geronemus will be a featured plenary session speaker at the American Academy of Dermatology’s summer meeting in New York Center on August 5. 2011. Dr. Geronemus will be speaking on the “Medical and Cosmetic Benefits of Fractional Resurfacing”.

This week, the FDA issued its Final Sunscreen Monograph in an effort to clarify some longstanding confusion.

The announcement is significant in that it acknowledges the importance of longer wavelength ultraviolet A (UVA) rays which contribute to skin cancer and premature aging of the skin.

Sunscreens may be labeled “broad-spectrum” if they provide protection against UVA and UVB rays, both of which contribute to the development of skin cancer. Only broad-spectrum sunscreens with SPF of 15 or higher can state that they protect against skin cancer; lower SPF numbers will contain a warning on their label that they might not be effective in preventing skin cancer or premature aging. Importantly, the ingredients used in sunscreens have a long track record and they are thought to be safe and effective.

So, protect your skin this summer by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, and don’t forget to reapply after 2 hours!

New Laser Procedure for Leg Veins

CoolTouch (CTEV™) endovenous laser procedure is a minimally invasive, virtually painless, image-guided procedure that utilizes laser energy to close abnormally enlarged or dysfunctional veins in the legs. Incompetent leg veins can lead to varicose veins or extensive telangiectasia (unsightly spider veins). Additionally, patients with faulty or incompetent leg veins often suffer from swelling, aching pain, fatigue, cramping, burning, skin irritation or ulceration, or phlebitis (inflammation of the vein). Traditionally, the only way to treat reflux of the leg veins and associated symptoms was to surgically remove the faulty vein(s). Now, successful treatment can be achieved with a simple laser procedure, CoolTouch (CTEV™).

CoolTouch (CTEV™) is performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia. A thin laser fiber is inserted through a tiny incision in the skin and positioned within the abnormal vein. As the fiber is slowly withdrawn, laser energy is delivered along the length of the damaged vein, causing it to close. The procedure is essentially painless, other than a slight needlestick with infiltration of local anesthesia. Compression stockings must be worn for several days following the procedure. Normal activity, including light exercise, may be resumed immediately following the procedure. Several weeks following the procedure, ultrasound is used to confirm closure of the treated vein. Subsequently, sclerotherapy (leg vein injections) may be used to clear remaining associated superficial veins.

Allergan to Introduce New Eyelash-Enhancing Drug

Following a New York Times story, the UK’s Telegraph (1/15, Leonard) reports that Allergan, the pharmaceutical “company that smoothed out wrinkles with Botox (botulinum toxin type A) has made another beauty-enhancing breakthrough with” a product “that grows longer, thicker eyelashes.”  The company “plans to introduce Latisse (bimatoprost), the first US government-approved prescription drug for eyelash lengthening, at the end of the month.”  The drug is intended to treat “a condition known as hyptorichosis of the eyelashes, in which a sufferer does not have enough of them.”  As was the case “with Botox, which was originally developed to deal with eyelid and neck spasms by paralyzing the muscles, the cosmetic potential of Latisse was an unintended side effect of a drug created to deal with glaucoma.”

“Side-effects might include itchiness of the eyes and a gradual change in color of the iris,” the UK’s Independent (1/15, Usborne) notes.  “And, aside from persuading their doctors to give them the necessary prescription, patients can expect to pay roughly $120 (£80) for a monthly dose.”

According to AHN (1/14), “Allergan chief executive David Pyott estimates Latisse may bring in for the company $500 million in long-term sales.”  Pyott “believes many women would not mind spending $120 for a three milliliter dose of Latisse, which is just equivalent to a cup of coffee daily.”

Tara Parker-Pope wrote in the New York Times (1/14) Well Blog that Latisse “has the same formula as Allergan’s eye drops for glaucoma, called Lumigan (bimatoprost ophthalmic),” which “is one of several drugs in a category known as prostaglandin analogs, which are meant to reduce dangerous pressure in the eyeball.”  But, “unlike the version for glaucoma, Latisse isn’t used as a drop, but instead is applied once daily to the base of the upper eyelashes with a disposable applicator.”

Fraxel – No More Blue!

There have been significant improvements in the new Fraxel laser over the past year. Most recently, the physicians at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York have introduced a new “tip” to the Fraxel laser which does not require the application of blue dye. This has allowed for an easier treatment process for our patients and more uniform treatment outcomes.

The laser has also been modified to allow for high energy treatments which can be more helpful for deeper lines and wrinkles as well as acne scars.
