The effects of aging and gravity can affect the eyes over time. This leads to hooding and sagging in the upper eyelid, which can make you look tired and even interfere with your line of vision. The lower eyelid may also change, as skin laxity and tiny fat deposits can create puffiness and bags under the eyes.

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, removes excess skin, muscle, and fat from the upper and lower eyelids. The procedure corrects drooping upper lids that tend to sag over time. Excess skin and the puffiness seen with the lower eyelids may also be addressed. The result is a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance once the eyes look more awake and alert.

Blepharoplasty may be performed as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with other plastic surgery procedures such as a facelift.

What does blepharoplasty treat?

A blepharoplasty may offer the following benefits to patients:

  • Removes bags and puffiness under the eyes
  • Creates smoother, firmer skin under the eyes
  • Reduces fine lines around the eye
  • Corrects hooding and drooping of the upper lid
  • May improve line of vision
  • Refreshed, rejuvenated appearance
  • Increased self-confidence

How is blepharoplasty performed?

Blepharoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation. If multiple procedures will be performed at the same time, general anesthesia might also be used. Incisions are placed on the underside of the lid or in the natural creases of the skin on the outer lid. This approach ensures minimal visible scarring after the procedure.

Through the incisions, your surgeon removes excess skin and fatty deposits. The lid is carefully contoured to create a smooth, natural line around the eye. Most eyelid surgeries take about 45 minutes to complete, depending on the amount of correction needed.

    What is recovery like?

You can expect to have some bruising and swelling after your blepharoplasty. These side effects can be managed by sleeping with your head elevated and using cold compresses on the area. Most patients are back to work within 1-2 weeks and swelling usually subsides completely within 3-6 weeks.

What can I expect from results?

Your results will become evident once your eyes have fully healed. You will enjoy a refreshed, more youthful look as the eyes appear more open and awake. The results of blepharoplasty typically last for many years.
