Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape and resize the nose. Nasal reconstruction was one of the first cosmetic procedures ever developed and is among those most frequently performed today. Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure in which deformities of the nose are corrected by removing, rearranging, or reshaping bone or cartilage.

While rhinoplasty is a common procedure, it is also one of the most complex. This surgery requires precision, expertise, and an intimate knowledge of facial anatomy to achieve a natural, proportionate result. The board-certified plastic surgeon at Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York brings decades of experience to the operating table, ensuring your rhinoplasty will be safe and produces the best possible results. Your surgeon will take plenty of time at your initial consultation to examine the area and discuss your concerns and goals to ensure your rhinoplasty meets your expectations and produces the best possible results for you.

What does rhinoplasty correct?

Rhinoplasty might be recommended for the following reasons:

  • Reduce the size of the nose
  • Remove a bump on the nasal bridge
  • Refine the nasal tip
  • Improve the angle of the nose
  • Reduce or create symmetry between the nostrils
  • Correct previous trauma to the nose

The surgery can also help patients who have difficulty breathing through the nose. It can be performed on all age groups, from teens to seniors.

How does rhinoplasty work?

You and your surgeon will discuss your concerns and what you can realistically expect from your surgery. Digital photographs and computer imaging allow our surgeon to evaluate the appropriate procedure to achieve the desired results. Some medications may need to be stopped before surgery to minimize bleeding risk, and antibiotics could be prescribed in anticipation of the procedure.

Surgery is usually performed under IV sedation, which results in less swelling and bruising than general anesthesia. To reduce nose size or change the shape, the skin of the nose is separated from the underlying skeleton of bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage are then reshaped and the skin re-draped over the surface. Patients who have a deviated septum may have this corrected at the same time. It is also not unusual to combine rhinoplasty with chin augmentation to improve the profile.

    What is recovery like?

Following surgery, a lightweight splint is applied to maintain the new shape of the nose. Nasal splints may also be inserted during of surgery to protect the septum. These are removed within a week. There is always some stuffiness of the nose, especially when work has been done on the nasal septum.

Pain is minimal and controlled with medications. Bruising occurs around the eyes, but begins to fade within a few days. Most people resume their normal activities within a week or two.

    What results can I expect?

While you will see improvement once your initial recovery time is completed, full results may not be evident for one year. Patients can still have some residual swelling until that point. Your results will be permanent.

    Questions and Answers

Q: Where will my incisions be placed?

A:  The incisions are placed inside the nose, unless the surgeon uses an open approach, in which case the incisions are made across the tissue between the nostrils. In cases where the nostrils flare, the surgeon may make an incision at the junction between the nose and the skin of the upper lip to narrow the flared appearance.

Q: How long does the surgery take?

A: Most rhinoplasty procedures take about two hours to perform. However, the time can vary based on the extent of correction required.

Q: What are the risks associated with rhinoplasty?

A: All surgery carries some risk, and rhinoplasty is no exception. Possible complications might include infection or excessive bleeding. These risks are much lower when you work with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has extensive experience with rhinoplasty techniques.

    Q: Is rhinoplasty painful?

A: During your surgery, you will be comfortably asleep thanks to IV sedation. After surgery, you will have a prescription for pain medication to keep you comfortable during the first few days. Your surgeon will also give you instructions on how to care for your nose during your recovery to promote healing and minimize side effects like bruising and swelling. Most patients find rhinoplasty to be a positive experience overall.

Q: Will insurance cover the cost of my rhinoplasty?

A: Your insurance company may pay for all or part of the costs associated with your surgery if it is performed as a result of nasal obstruction. It is recommended that you check with your carrier to determine if there is coverage.
