Our Favorite Combination Treatments
Dermatologists are constantly developing new technologies and techniques for better patient results. At Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York, our doctors are often the ones creating these new treatments, but we have also discovered one technique that can always produce unique, patient-specific results: combination therapy.
The board-certified dermatologists at our Manhattan and Southampton offices use the best and latest in dermatological treatments for our medical and cosmetic services. Our doctors also lead and participate in dermatological studies at our full-time, on-site research division that’s devoted exclusively to investigative pursuits. Our goal is to continually discover the best possible treatments for our patients and others around the world.
The Benefits of Combination Treatments
The devices and products our dermatologists use for skin treatments are all created to address specific skin concerns and aesthetic goals. Certain lasers can treat acne scars, others can smooth lines and wrinkles, and you might turn to dermal filler injections to contour or volumize your face or Botox® Cosmetic to treat wrinkles. None of these treatments are likely to fully address all your skin concerns because no two patients’ needs, sensitivities, and goals are the same. That’s where combination treatments come in.
By combining multiple therapies into one treatment session, you can leave our Manhattan or Southampton office fully refreshed. You may come in wanting to smooth dynamic wrinkles in your face, but maybe you also have acne scars. The combination of neuromodulator injections and laser resurfacing can restore youthfulness to a much greater degree, addressing both of these issues at the same time. You can also limit the number of times you need to come into the office, which is more time and cost-effective for you.
One study led in part by Dr. Roy G. Geronemus found that doctors could improve surgical scars with pulsed dye laser treatment and CO2 ablative fractional resurfacing, but that combining these two modalities provided an “accelerated outcome on the cosmesis of recent surgical scars.”
Below are some of our combination treatments you may not have thought were possible, but can produce beautiful results.
Botox + LaseMD or Clear+Brilliant = Anti-Aging Duo
Turning back the clock on aging is a common patient goal, and not much can beat the speed and comprehensive rejuvenation of a Clear+Brilliant or LaseMD laser session with Botox Cosmetic injections. Both treatments are quick and non-invasive, and their combination enhances the results of each. Clear+Brilliant and LaseMD stimulate new skin creation that appears smoother and brighter. This device can clear away uneven pigmentation, sun damage, brown spots, and enlarged pores. Following this up with the wrinkle-eliminating power of a neuromodulator like Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin can further smooth your skin and leave you with a refreshed appearance and beautiful glow not possible without a combination technique.
Pulsed Dye Laser + Excel V + Fraxel or Picosecond Lasers + Q-Switched Ruby = Sun Damage Repair
Sun damage is another common skin concern, and we can create a total treatment plan for this issue with Pulsed Dye (PDL), Excel V, Fraxel, and Picosecond or Q-Switched Ruby lasers. These are the tools our dermatologists recommend to most patients to treat brown and red spots left by sun damage. Most of the sun damage we experience is in the first 18 years of our life, so many adults can benefit from one of these combination treatments. One of our PDL devices will target blood vessels deep within the dermis, causing your body to resorb the damaged vessels. The PicoSure device can then deliver quick, high-intensity laser pulses, gently disrupting the pigment causing discoloration on the surface. The skin will repair itself, appearing clearer over time.
Laser Resurfacing + Sculptra = Best Face Forward
Another treatment combination that can enhance your face is laser resurfacing with the collagen stimulator Sculptra. Resurfacing works first by targeting common skin conditions like age and sun spots, wrinkles, and acne scars. One of our board-certified dermatologists will recommend the best laser for your resurfacing treatment during your consultation. Sculptra then stimulates collagen production deep in the dermal structure to repair your skin from the inside out, volumizing and firming as it subtly corrects wrinkles and hollow areas. The results of this combination may be a bright and more youthful appearance.
Fraxel, Genius, or PicoSure + Injectable Fillers = Hand Enhancement
Your hands may not be at the top of your aesthetic concerns, but their aging symptoms can take away from your overall youthful look if they do not match the rest of your appearance. Fraxel, Genius, and PicoSure devices with injectable fillers are two treatments that go hand-in-hand for this purpose. You may know our dermatologists use the PicoSure device for tattoo removal, but it’s also effective against pigmented lesions, birthmarks, stretch marks, and melasma on your hands or other areas. After your laser treatments, fillers can add the finishing touch by smoothing wrinkles and adding volume in any sunken areas. The plumping power can also soften the appearance of veins, a common aging concern in the hands.
LaseMD or Clear & Brilliant + Topicals = Melasma and Post-Inflamatory Hyperpigmentation Improvement
Dr. Geronemus and a team of researchers found in a study published just this year that combining a low-energy, low density 1927 nm fractional thulium fiber laser and a topical medication “improved clinical outcomes and quality of life associated with melasma.” Melasma is incurable, but this treatment plan can improve the appearance of melasma and the comfort of patients.
Botox + Fraxel = Effective Anti-Aging
Dr. Geronemus and Dr. Robert Anolik participated in another combination treatment study to determine the safety of performing Botox Cosmetic injections and a Fraxel laser treatment in one session. They looked for signs of Botox spreading to unintended areas, and this occurred just once out of 393 patients. Anytime our board-certified dermatologists recommend combination treatments, the combinations have been tested for safety and efficacy, so you can be sure you are receiving the best possible care.
