Over time, the relentless effects of gravity and the natural aging process change the appearance of our face and neck. A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, improves visible signs of aging in the face and neck to create a more youthful appearance. The surgical procedure removes excess skin to produce a firmer, smoother surface. Jowls along the jawline are also removed as the loose skin is eliminated and the definition is restored to the area.
A facelift is a surgical procedure that requires anesthesia and a recovery period afterward. However, the results of a facelift, when performed by an experienced, skilled plastic surgeon, like the plastic surgeons on our team, can be quite dramatic. The procedure can take up to 10 years off your appearance and last at least 10 years.
What does a facelift treat?
A facelift addresses a myriad of age-related concerns, including:
- Sagging and hollowing in the mid-face
- Deep creases along the nose, extending to the corner of the mouth
- Loss of muscle tone and skin laxity in the lower face, resulting in jowls
- Loss of skin elasticity and excess fatty deposits under the jaw and chin
- Deep creases below the lower eyelid
How is a facelift performed?
A facelift is usually performed under general anesthesia, although local anesthesia with sedation can be used for less extensive procedures. Incisions are placed behind the ears and within the hairline as much as possible, to avoid visible scarring after the procedure. Through the incisions, your surgeon repositions underlying fat and tissue to create a naturally youthful facial shape. Excess skin is excised and remaining skin is tightened to create a smoother appearance.
Facelifts are typically done on an outpatient basis. You will go home the same day as your procedure with post-operative instructions designed to maximize your comfort and your healing process. Your surgeon will see you in the office for follow-up visits to ensure your recovery is progressing smoothly and address potential concerns as they arise.
What is recovery like?
Most patients experience some bruising, tenderness, and swelling after a facelift. Your surgeon will prescribe oral pain medication to keep you comfortable during the first few days after surgery. Most patients return to work and other activities within about two weeks.
What can I expect from my results?
You will see your results become evident as you heal from your procedure. Skin will look firmer and smoother, with a visible reduction in lines and creases. Our surgeons take care to ensure your results are completely natural. The improvements should last 10 years or more as long as you practice daily sun protection and use high-quality skincare products. Questions and Answers
Q: At what age should I consider a facelift?
A: There is no set age when a facelift becomes appropriate. Most patients decide to move forward with surgery once non-surgical treatments do not provide sufficient results. Your overall health is also a factor when determining whether surgery will be safe for you. Your surgeon will provide a comprehensive examination and detailed discussion of your concerns and goals to determine whether a surgical facelift is the right choice for you.
Q: What areas does a facelift treat?
A: A facelift primarily focuses on the mid and lower face. This procedure helps treat hollowing and loss of definition in the midface, deep creases around the nose and mouth, and jowl formation along the jawline. You might also see some improvement in the neck area. However, if the neck has significant aging symptoms, a neck lift might be recommended with your facelift to produce an optimal outcome.
Q: Can I have a facelift with local anesthesia?
A: Our surgeons perform most facelifts under general anesthesia. However, there are situations where local with sedation might be appropriate. You can discuss your options at your initial consultation to determine the safest approach for you.
Q: Will I have scarring after my facelift?
A: Any time you have a procedure that requires incisions, there will be scarring afterward. Your surgeon will be strategic in the placement of incisions for a facelift to minimize their appearance afterward. Most incisions are placed within the hairline, behind the ear, or in the natural creases of the skin where they will not be noticeable.
Q: When will I be ready to show off my results?
A: The average recovery time after a facelift is about 2 weeks. During this time, you will likely experience bruising and swelling that will interfere with your final result. Once these side effects subside, you will be ready to show your refreshed face to the world!
