About Central Park
Central Park is an area in New York City located between Manhattan’s Upper West and Upper East Sides. The urban park is the fifth largest in New York City with more than 840 acres of land and is the most visited park in the United States. Central Park is a popular spot with more than 42 million annual visitors and is the most filmed location in the world.
History of Central Park
Proposals for the creation of Central Park began in the 1840s and were approved in 1853 to span 778 acres. Landscape architects Frederick Olmsted and Calvert Vaux won a design competition and began construction on Central Park in 1857, and areas of the park opened to the public in 1858. Additional land was added to the northern end of the park in 1859, bringing the size to 843 acres.
The park was completed in 1876 and experienced a decline due to many tourists and residents visiting the land. The Central Park Conservatory was created in 1980 to refurbish areas in the park and prevent further deterioration.
